This diplococcus bacterium specifically targets the columnar epithelium of the urethra, cervix, rectum, and conjunctiva. It predominantly affects young, sexually active adults, easily spreading through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse. While frequently asymptomatic in females, it is a leading global cause of pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.
