Description
After a primary chickenpox infection, the virus lies dormant within sensory nerve roots for decades. When the immune system weakens due to aging, stress, or illness, the virus reactivates and travels down the nerve fiber to the skin. It almost exclusively affects older adults and immunocompromised individuals.
