Definition
Abnormal redness of the skin resulting from local capillary dilation and congestion.
Clinical Details
The local immune response to viral antigens in the skin releases vasoactive mediators that widen local blood vessels. This increases blood flow, making the skin along the affected dermatome appear bright red and angry. It forms the inflammatory base upon which the characteristic blisters subsequently erupt.
