Intense, burning, or stabbing pain occurring along the course of a damaged nerve.
Clinical Details
Viral replication aggressively damages the affected sensory ganglion, triggering massive inflammation within the nerve itself. This causes intense nerve pain that often precedes the physical appearance of the rash by several days. If the pain persists for months after the rash heals, it is classified as postherpetic neuralgia.
