Description
An abrasion occurs when the skin violently rubs against a rough surface, shearing away the epidermis and sometimes the upper dermis. Commonly known as road rash or a rug burn, it is a frequent injury in cycling accidents, sports falls, and childhood play. While typically superficial, large abrasions can be highly painful and prone to bacterial infection if not properly cleaned.
