Description
Subacute thyroiditis is an inflammatory condition of the thyroid that generally follows an upper respiratory tract viral infection, such as an adenovirus or coxsackievirus. The viral antigen triggers a sudden, destructive inflammatory response in the thyroid follicles. This damages the cells, causing them to leak large amounts of pre-formed thyroid hormone into the bloodstream, resulting in a temporary, painful hyperthyroidism.
