Definition
A temporary state of excessive thyroid hormone in the blood.
Clinical Details
As the inflammatory process ruptures the thyroid follicles, weeks' worth of stored thyroxine is suddenly dumped directly into the circulation. This causes an acute hyperthyroid phase, presenting with heat intolerance, rapid heart rate, and anxiety. This phase lasts only until the pre-formed hormone stores are exhausted.
