Description
The spirochete bacteria are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. It predominantly affects individuals engaging in outdoor activities in heavily wooded, endemic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. If the initial infection goes untreated, the bacteria disseminate to cause severe, chronic neurological and rheumatological complications.
