Description
This chronic condition is caused by a weakened lower esophageal sphincter that fails to close properly after swallowing. It is highly prevalent in overweight individuals and those whose diets consist of highly acidic, spicy, or fatty foods. The constant acid backwash irritates the esophageal lining and can cause precancerous changes.
