Definition
A painful burning sensation in the chest, usually behind the breastbone.
Clinical Details
When the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes inappropriately, highly corrosive stomach acid splashes up into the unprotected esophagus. The acid chemically burns the delicate tissue lining, causing a fiery, radiating discomfort in the chest. This pain is heavily exacerbated by lying down or bending over.
