Description
A ruptured spleen is a life-threatening internal injury characterized by a tear in the capsule covering the spleen, an organ sitting under the left rib cage. It is most commonly caused by blunt force trauma to the abdomen during motor vehicle accidents, sporting collisions, or severe beatings. Because the spleen is highly vascular, a rupture leads to massive, rapid internal hemorrhaging.
