Referred pain experienced in the left shoulder tip.
Clinical Details
This unique symptom, known clinically as Kehr's sign, occurs because free blood in the abdomen irritates the underside of the diaphragm. The phrenic nerve, which innervates the diaphragm, shares a neural pathway with nerves in the left shoulder. The brain misinterprets this diaphragmatic irritation as pain originating in the shoulder tip.
