Description
First documented heavily in malnourished populations in Jamaica, this syndrome is a complex presentation of polyneuropathy primarily driven by severe, combined deficiencies of the B-vitamin complex. It uniquely and simultaneously attacks both the peripheral sensory nerves in the extremities and the cranial nerves handling highly specialized sensory input like vision and hearing. Patients typically present with a devastating triad of agonizing nerve pain in the feet, declining visual acuity, and severe genital dermatitis.
