Hypomanganesemia (CLINICAL)
Description
Manganese is a required cofactor for numerous enzymes involved in amino acid, cholesterol, and carbohydrate metabolism, as well as the mitochondrial scavenging of free radicals. Because it is highly abundant in most standard diets, human deficiency is exceptionally rare and usually induced via incomplete parenteral nutrition. It manifests primarily through impaired lipid metabolism, skeletal growth abnormalities, and compromised connective tissue synthesis.
