Description
Chromium in its trivalent form is a trace mineral thought to enhance the action of insulin by binding to and activating the insulin receptor on target cells. True clinical deficiency is exceedingly rare, generally only documented in patients receiving prolonged intravenous feeding without trace mineral supplementation. It presents clinically as severe, sudden-onset insulin resistance mimicking Type 2 Diabetes.
