Progressive damage to major peripheral nerve trunks leading to severe muscle weakness.
Clinical Details
As the infection penetrates deeper into the larger nerve bundles of the limbs, it provokes a damaging, chronic cell-mediated immune response. The major nerves physically swell and become visibly palpable under the skin, eventually losing their ability to conduct motor signals. This results in devastating paralysis, notably causing clawed hands and drop foot.
