Description
Marasmus occurs when an individual, typically an infant or young child, is chronically deprived of both proteins and calories, leading to a state of literal starvation. Unlike Kwashiorkor, it is an adaptation to general starvation where the body begins aggressively consuming its own tissues for survival. The condition results in extreme emaciation and a total lack of subcutaneous fat.
