Eyes that appear recessed into their sockets.
Clinical Details
The retro-orbital fat pads, which normally support and push the eyes forward, are consumed by the body for energy during prolonged starvation. As these fat deposits vanish, the eyes sink deeply into the orbits. This gives the face a characteristic "old person" appearance, common in severely malnourished infants.
