Description
The sella turcica is a bony cradle at the base of the skull that holds the pituitary gland. In primary empty sella syndrome, a defect in the membrane covering this cradle allows cerebrospinal fluid to leak in. The fluid pressure slowly flattens the pituitary gland against the bone, making the sella look 'empty' on an MRI. Often asymptomatic, it can sometimes cause varying degrees of hormonal deficiency.
