Definition

The spontaneous, inappropriate flow of breast milk in individuals not pregnant or nursing.

Clinical Details

Prolactin is the primary hormone responsible for stimulating the mammary glands to produce milk. When a tumor secretes excessive amounts of prolactin, it can trigger active milk production regardless of pregnancy status or gender. Patients may experience a spontaneous, milky white discharge from one or both nipples.
