Description
Campylobacter jejuni bacteria colonize the small and large intestines, releasing highly destructive toxins that severely damage the mucosal layer. It affects millions globally each year, usually causing a severe, self-limiting gastrointestinal illness. In rare instances, the immune system's subsequent cross-reaction to the bacterial antigens can trigger paralyzing Guillain-Barré syndrome.
