This highly contagious virus specifically targets and destroys rapidly dividing red blood cell progenitors in the bone marrow. It primarily affects elementary school-aged children, causing a mild, self-limiting illness with a highly distinctive rash. However, it can cause severe aplastic crisis in individuals with underlying hemolytic disorders like sickle cell anemia.
