Description
Edwards syndrome is caused by the presence of a third copy of chromosome 18. This extra genetic material alters the course of development and causes multiple life-threatening medical problems, including severe heart defects and organ malformations. It is the second most common autosomal trisomy reaching full term, but the survival rate beyond the first year is extremely low.
