Description
Endemic goiter is a physical adaptation of the thyroid gland attempting to compensate for severe dietary iodine deficiency. Iodine is a required trace mineral necessary for the synthesis of vital thyroid hormones regulating metabolism. It frequently occurs in geographic regions where the soil, and therefore the local diet, is exceptionally poor in iodine.
