Description
Riedel's thyroiditis is an exceptionally rare condition where aggressive, fibrotic scar tissue slowly destroys the thyroid gland and extends into surrounding neck structures, such as the trachea, esophagus, and parathyroid glands. It is considered part of the IgG4-related systemic disease spectrum. The gland becomes functionally useless and physically turns into a rock-hard mass.
