Description
Primary aldosteronism is caused by an autonomous overproduction of aldosterone, usually due to a benign adenoma in the adrenal cortex or bilateral adrenal hyperplasia. Aldosterone normally directs the kidneys to retain sodium and excrete potassium to maintain blood pressure. When overproduced, it causes dangerous sodium and water retention, making it a leading and often underdiagnosed cause of secondary, treatment-resistant hypertension.
