Description
Hypoparathyroidism is characterized by a deficiency of parathyroid hormone (PTH), leading to dangerously low levels of calcium and high levels of phosphorus in the blood. By far the most common cause is iatrogenic, resulting from accidental damage or removal of the parathyroid glands during thyroid or neck surgery. Rare cases can be attributed to autoimmune destruction or genetic agenesis.
