Common Name(s):
Tick Fever
Alternative Names & Classifications:
Babesiosis (CLINICAL)
Description
Babesiosis is transmitted primarily by the bite of infected Ixodes ticks, sharing the exact same ecological vectors as Lyme disease. The microscopic parasites invade, replicate within, and eventually rupture human erythrocytes in a cycle very similar to malaria, leading to significant hemolytic anemia. While often mild in healthy hosts, it can be rapidly fatal in splenectomized, elderly, or severely immunocompromised patients.
