A condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be made.
Clinical Details
The Babesia parasite's obligate asexual replication cycle occurs entirely within host erythrocytes, eventually causing the cell to burst and release new merozoites. This direct mechanical destruction of red blood cells rapidly outpaces the bone marrow's regenerative capacity. It results in profound pallor, jaundice from bilirubin release, and severe systemic tissue hypoxia.
