Description

Amebiasis is transmitted via the fecal-oral route, typically through the ingestion of resilient parasite cysts in contaminated food or water in areas with poor sanitation. The excysted trophozoite form actively secretes proteolytic enzymes that lyse host epithelial cells, invading the colonic mucosa to cause characteristic flask-shaped ulcers and amebic dysentery. In severe cases, the parasites breach the portal venous system and travel to the liver, forming massive amebic liver abscesses.
