Definition

The frequent passage of loose stools containing visible blood and significant mucus.

Clinical Details

Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites actively destroy and consume the colonic epithelial lining, creating deep, necrotic ulcers that erode into submucosal blood vessels. This profound tissue destruction leads to severe exudative inflammation. The resulting dysentery consists of small volume, frequent bowel movements composed largely of blood, necrotic tissue, and mucus.
