Description
In MSUD, the inability to process branched-chain amino acids leads to a toxic buildup of acyl-CoA metabolites that poison the nervous system. L-Carnitine functions as a biological transport shuttle; it actively binds to these toxic acyl groups inside the mitochondria, forming acylcarnitines that can be safely transported out of the cells and excreted rapidly into the urine.
