Definition
A low-growing, fast-spreading perennial groundcover (4–8 inches tall) that forms dense, mat-like carpets of foliage. It is characterized by small, often colorful, dark green to bronze or purple leaves that grow in rosettes. In spring, it produces erect, 6–10 inch spikes of blue or violet flowers. Historically, it has been used in herbal medicine for its astringent properties, specifically to manage symptoms of hyperthyroidism, as a heart tonic, and to treat coughs.
