Breathing cessation episodes
Type: Symptom
Definition
Observed moments during sleep where the patient completely stops breathing for several seconds.
Clinical Details
The relaxed tissue completely collapses, blocking the airway entirely despite the patient's chest continuing to heave in an effort to breathe. These terrifying pauses are usually followed by a loud snort or gasping sound as the brain briefly wakes the body.
