Clinical Details
Without the protective AAT protein, enzymes called neutrophil elastases act unchecked, attacking and destroying the delicate walls of the lung's air sacs. This progressive damage drastically reduces the lungs' surface area for oxygen exchange, causing severe respiratory distress.
