Definition
An abnormally rapid breathing rate intended to compensate for respiratory failure.
Clinical Details
Chemoreceptors detect dropping oxygen levels and trigger the brainstem to increase ventilatory drive. Patients take rapid, shallow breaths but cannot overcome the diffusion barrier.
