Definition

An alteration in the normal voice, typically presenting as hoarseness.

Clinical Details

The thyroid gland sits directly over the recurrent laryngeal nerves, which control the vocal cords. If the invasive tumor compresses or damages these nerves, the patient's voice becomes distinctly raspy or breathy.
