Somnolence
Type: Symptom
Definition
An uncontrollable, abnormal sleepiness or drowsiness that dominates the daytime hours.
Clinical Details
During the second, meningoencephalitic stage, the parasite extensively invades the central nervous system, causing widespread neuroinflammation and altering neurotransmitter levels. This severely disrupts the host's circadian rhythm, leading to an inversion of the normal sleep-wake cycle. The patient experiences continuous, irresistible bouts of deep daytime sleep, eventually progressing to a terminal coma.
