Rectal Prolapse
Type: Symptom
Definition
The protrusion of the mucosal lining of the rectum through the anal sphincter.
Clinical Details
This is a severe complication seen almost exclusively in heavily infected pediatric patients with chronic dysentery. The severe inflammation of the rectal mucosa, combined with profound malnutrition and constant straining during defecation, weakens the pelvic floor musculature. The engorged, friable rectal tissue eventually turns inside out and prolapses externally.
