Definition
A painless, crater-like lesion on the skin that develops at the site of a sandfly bite.
Clinical Details
In cutaneous leishmaniasis, parasites multiply within dermal macrophages, causing an initial papule that progressively enlarges and centralizes into necrotic tissue. The edges become raised and indurated, creating a classic volcanic-looking ulcer. These lesions can take months or years to heal, typically leaving significant disfiguring scars.
