Definition
An abnormal and massive dilation of the colon accompanied by compromised peristalsis.
Clinical Details
The parasite selectively destroys the intramural autonomic nervous system (Auerbach's plexus) within the gastrointestinal tract. Deprived of normal innervation, the colon loses muscular tone and the ability to propel feces, leading to massive dilation. This results in severe, intractable constipation and a risk of bowel perforation.
