Definition
A severe inflammation causing the tongue to become incredibly smooth, beefy red, and physically swollen.
Clinical Details
The rapidly dividing mucosal cells covering the surface of the tongue are highly sensitive to disruptions in DNA synthesis caused by the B12 deficiency. The tiny, texturizing papillae on the tongue atrophy and die, leaving the surface looking shiny and feeling intensely sore. Patients experience agonizing burning sensations when attempting to eat spicy or acidic foods.
