Spinal Rigidity
Type: Symptom
Definition
A severe, progressive loss of flexibility and normal range of motion within the spinal column.
Clinical Details
As the body pathologically forms new vertical bone bridges known as syndesmophytes, the highly flexible spine turns into a rigid, solid structure. This pathological fusion, commonly referred to as bamboo spine, severely limits the patient's ability to bend forward, backward, or twist. The entire torso moves as one solid, unbending mechanical block.
