Definition
A pathological, severe dryness of the eyes resulting from dramatically reduced tear production.
Clinical Details
As the autoimmune attack destroys the lacrimal glands, the delicate protective tear film covering the surface of the eye evaporates. The unprotected conjunctiva and cornea become highly inflamed, creating a persistent, agonizing sensation of having sand or grit trapped under the eyelids. Without artificial lubrication, this chronic friction can lead to severe corneal ulceration.
