Definition
An abnormal, forward protrusion of one or both eyeballs out of their bony orbits.
Clinical Details
The rogue autoantibodies aggressively target and inflame the connective tissues and extraocular muscles situated securely behind the eyes. As these specific retro-orbital tissues severely swell and accumulate complex carbohydrates, they mechanically push the eyeball outward. This creates a distinct, wide-eyed stare and frequently prevents the patient from fully closing their eyelids.
