Definition

The frequent passage of loose, watery, and often foul-smelling stools.

Clinical Details

The flattened, damaged intestinal villi completely lose their capacity to properly absorb dietary fats, carbohydrates, and excess fluids. These unabsorbed nutrients travel to the colon, where they draw in excess water and are fermented by local gut bacteria. This results in the frequent expulsion of pale, greasy, and highly voluminous stools.
