Acute inflammation of the optic nerve causing sudden visual disturbances and eye pain.
Clinical Details
The immune system rapidly strips the myelin from the nerve bundle connecting the eye to the brain, disrupting visual signal transmission. Patients frequently experience a sudden, partial loss of vision in one eye, often accompanied by blurred shapes or washed-out colors. Moving the affected eye usually triggers sharp, localized pain behind the orbit.
