Definition

A sensation of extreme rigidity and pain when moving a joint immediately after waking up.

Clinical Details

The accumulation of inflammatory mediators and fluid overnight restricts the joint's normal range of physical motion. This pronounced stiffness typically lasts for more than an hour upon waking in the morning. It gradually improves as physical activity warms up the affected joint structures.
