Definition
A progressive, symmetrical loss of muscle tone starting at the head and moving downward.
Clinical Details
The relentless systemic spread of the toxin functionally disconnects the brain from the entire peripheral muscular system. The paralysis starts with the facial muscles, rapidly moves to the shoulders and arms, and finally paralyzes the legs. When it reaches the diaphragm, the patient physically loses the ability to draw breath, requiring emergency mechanical ventilation.
