Definition
A temporary but dangerous cessation of breathing, particularly common in infected infants.
Clinical Details
In very young children, the thick mucosal secretions and intense airway inflammation can entirely occlude the tiny respiratory passages. Their developing nervous systems fail to sustain the immense physical effort required to breathe through the obstruction. The child simply stops breathing, requiring immediate medical resuscitation.
